Human rights are one of the central issues related to human beings' values and existence. Local laws protecting human rights reflect societies’ awareness; this consciousness molds human rights into legal frameworks, domestic laws, and international treaties. The global human rights movement has resulted the International Charter of Human Rights, followed by international conventions related to the state of peace and the state of war.Since these instruments are a branch of international law, research and studies have been conducted in European languages, primarily English, depriving Arabic speakers of the possibility to learn, benefit and contribute to the field of human rights. Qanun believes in the necessity of localizing and supporting integrative human rights research as well as academic studies in the Arabic language. Qanun seeks to disseminate the knowledge of human rights issues at two levels: both the legal, human rights specialists’ level, such as those working in judicial and security institutions, and at the non-specialists’ level, as well. This will, in turn, make human rights visible, not only in the academic world, but also reflected to the general culture, as well.
Qanun works to be the leading Arabic platform supporting human rights research and studies, by building a library containing Arabic primary sources and comprehensive archives of human rights instruments, enriching the Arabic content with reliable and in-depth studies of human rights issues, and disseminating human rights culture in the Arab world.
